Woven Curtain Fabric

We have a wide variety of high quality woven fabrics that are ideal for a range of soft furnishing projects including curtains, roman blinds, cushions and upholstery. We offer free samples of all our fabrics so if colour and texture is important to you, please feel free to order these online.

Plain weave (also called tabby weave or taffeta weave) is the most basic of three fundamental types of textile weaves (along with satin weave and twill). It is strong and hard-wearing, used for furnishing fabrics.  Some examples of fabric with plain weave are chiffon, organza, taffeta, silk, linen, cotton, voile, muslin. When manufacturing plain weave, the warp and weft are aligned so they form a simple criss-cross pattern.

Balanced plain weaves are fabrics in which the warp and weft are made of threads of the same weight (size) and the same number of ends per inch as picks per inch.

Basket-weave is a variation of plain weave in which two or more threads are bundled and then woven as one in the warp or weft, or both. A balanced plain weave can be identified by its checkerboard-like appearance.

History Of Woven Fabric

Historically eighteenth century crewel embroidery preferentially used a linen and cotton twill plain-weave because it wore well.

We offer a Made To Measure service on our wool curtain fabrics. If you would like to know more about our Made To Measure curtains please contact us or read more about our made to measure curtains here.

We always recommend that you dry clean our woven curtain fabrics at a specialist dry cleaners.

All our woven fabrics are available both online and in store from our fabric warehouse in Northamptonshire.

Before choosing your curtain fabric there are a few points to consider about the type of fabric, type of curtains, curtain lining, curtain pole, pelmets or valences and about how much fabric you will need. Take a look at our measure & calculate page to help you with all these points.
